Mothers

Mothers are ANYWAY friends.
An anyway friend is the one person in your life who, no matter what they say or do, no matter what they’ve been through with you, they love you anyway”
My mother dabbles around watching over our family business, cooperative and spend so much time at the church.  So if you're wondering where I got my tendency to multi-task, it's from my mother.  If I had spent just half a lifetime with my father, it was my mother who was the consistent presence.  Whenever I have friends around in Baguio, she used to tell embarrassing trivial things about me until I did get used to it and just say, that's what mom's are for.  She's overly proud of me that you get to hear people mention how often I travel and various stuffs as said by my mother.  I guess that's how moms are, they love to talk about their kids non-stop and they'll always be there whether you're on the top or bottom of the world.
Super is just one word that we associate moms.  I have aunts, friends, colleagues that are moms and in whatever walk of life they are in, there's one thing constant, they are all proud of their kids. Each tiny steps and each new milestones are theirs to cherish.  I have so much respect to moms whether they work and dabble things at home or they go the full time mom routine because they choose to be a mother.  Motherhood is not only a choice but an instinct and even how messed up things are, they'll be there to clean things up because that's what they represent.  They are our north star.  Whenever we are lost, we just retreat back to them and somehow, they'll tell us, everything will be alright and it would be the thing that will matter.
My mom is in a pamper herself mode already and who can blame her.  She did have a full life of responsibility.  It's not an easy task being a mom and from the bottom of my heart, I am greeting my mom and all the moms out there (including my aunts, friends and colleagues) a happy mother's day.

Discovering Duathlon

Duathlon

When you slowly pile up the milestones in running, you get to ask yourself what's next?  Will I run longer or go the ultra route or will I try multisports?  I somehow ended up choosing multisports and I am at the start of doing duathlons having my first one last March.  It was a long drawn decision as it does take a bit of financial investment to start up with a good bike. Once you get used to your bike or cross your first finish line, it gets quite addictive.  Cycling is fun but it does take a deal of hard work as my 3 times a week run training has now become 6 times a week to incorporate the bike part.  To this date, I'm still trying to learn how to balance the increased training mileage but so far I've been finding ways.  I still have a long way to go in duathlon but I'm really enjoying the process and part of that is attending duathlon clinics.

Discovering Duathlons

Coach Andy Leuterio of Alpha Training Systems conducted a discovering duathlon clinic at Bonifacio High Street powered by Newton, Fitness First, Runr, Specialized and others.  Since Total Fitness was an event partner, Team Total Fitness came in full force for the event which also served as the team's group training session for the week.  The event was packed with all registration slots taken.   Toby Claudio of Toby's and Runnr opened the event and Coach Andy provided a brief introduction about duathlons as well as conducted the whole session. It also includes a talk about bike by Specialized, bike fitting and some words from Mark Ellis of Fitness First. Then it was time to bring in the Suffferfest.

The Sufferfest

Not to be a glutton for punishment but it's how far you push yourself in sport that makes you a better athlete.  Sufferfest is a series of cycling videos designed to simulate actual bike workout which is a better alternative than just spinning.  It brings you to sprints, to mountains and to actual race situations wherein you apply different approaches in your speed, resistance and cadence.  It does help you build up speed, power and endurance even when you are indoors.  Sufferfest was the video all throughout the workout.

Bike - Run - Bike - Run - Bike

The duathlon clinic had an approach of doing a bike simulation for the first 10 minutes and then run a full lap at high street then another 18 to 20 minutes bike simulations and run another lap at high street before going for a final sprint and cool down in the bike leg.  Above anything else, the workout helps you experiencing the transition phase wherein you shift from bike to run and run to bike.  I did learn some valuable lessons  in approaching the transition phase.  It was not easy to run from biking as you're legs are a bit wobbly but basically I used the run splits to find the right stride that can endure despite fatigue in the quads.  It was a series of hits and misses but I did learn a lot from the duathlon clinic.

Duathlon Discovered

This also serves as a training for the upcoming duathlon come May 27 and by the amount of participants it seems that more people have discovered duathlons.  It was also a good experience for those who have yet to own a bike as Fitness First lent some spin bikes to be used by the participants.  Event participants had a series of freebies which includes a Newton Singlet and Specialized water bottle among others.  There was also a raffle to cap the event.  Another good news from this event was that there will be more sessions like this in the future.  So be on the look out for another chance to discover duathlon.

A Behind the Scene Look at SuBIT

Pre-Race
Even as I've triathlete teammates, this year's edition of Subic International Triathlon was the first tri-event I was able to watch.  Since most events are out of town, it does take much time and effort to go out of your training schedule and weekend activities to get a chance to watch it.  This year, I made it a point to watch SuBIT and take a glimpse on what it would feel like in an actual triathlon event.  Of course, a triathlon event does not begin at gun start.  It start on the first day of training or even when you start conditioning your mind on joining the event.
Dungaree Beach
Dungaree Beach
Dungaree Beach is the site of the swim leg wherein the triathletes would have to do two loops of 750 meters open water swim.  A day before the actual standard distance event, triathletes were here testing out the waters.  The waves are a bit strong by the time we were there at noon time.  It was also a chance to relax and spend time with family and friends before the big race the following day.
Bike Recon Mission
I joined Jeff late in the afternoon for an easy ride around Subic just to test the course and there's something about Subic that makes riding a bike more fun and relaxing.  It's the scenery and the not so crowded traffic in the area.  Since we were just squeezing the bike rides between activities at SuBIT, it was just a short one though I definitely would have wanted to bike some more.  I'm still drawn by the thought that it would have been fun to bike from Waterfront Road to Dungaree on race day as the roads were closed for cars. It's gonna be 40K for the participants on this course for the bike leg of SuBIT
Carbo-loading
A Carbo-loading event is a common pre-race ritual.  Part of the SuBIT registration was a buffet dinner after the briefing on the race course and the event.  We had our dinner at Jerry's Grill in Waterfront Road. Of course, it's early bed time for those joining the event the next day.
The Main Event
It was exciting to watch an actual triathlon event from the time the participant test the course, to the time they hit the water and the time they take in their dose of carbohydrates and do their final stretches. These are the things that happen even before an athlete steps into the starting line.  The swim had the athletes go in waves spaced 15 minutes apart wherein they have do two loops of 750 meter open water swim.  Then they transition to a very tough bike course wherein they have to undergo 40 kilometer Subic's rolling and at times hilly terrain before the go on the a 10 km run leg covering 4 loops around Waterfront Road and Dewey Avenue and an additional several hundred meters to the finish line.
Swim
The Swim leg was properly spaced wherein the 15 minute difference meant that each new wave would be about a lap apart thus not overcrowding the swim area.  Seeing familiar faces navigate the swim leg was a nice sight to watch and some would have different strategies.  Some would go all out in the swim leg while some would reserve their energy for the longer bike and run leg.  Some would rest in between laps while some would always be on the go.
Bike
The bike leg was a 40K challenge with a very tough bike route around Subic since there were hilly portions of the course.  I guess this is where the contenders broke away from the challengers.  Heat was also a factor at this part especially for the last wave to be launched at the swim leg which is the 30-39 age category.
Run
The triathletes were slowly piling up in the run course with the earlier waves starting to go over the run course a 10K run with the Subic Bay ocean view in Waterfront Road and Dewey Avenue where supporters of the participants were packed cheering for them.   At each time during the four loops, there would be new faces who just completed their bike leg and using whatever is left for one final push to the finish line.
Behind the Scene

I was on photographer duties (photos here) this time around while watching the event.  It was great watching a triathlon event.  It was great to see Team Total Fitness and my triathlon friends had a great performance for the event and excellent debut race for Season 2.  It did remind me of my own journey into multisports that started from running to duathlon and maybe... just maybe triathlon.  For that part, I should be back to my race preparations for my own duathlon event.  I have a long way to go yet in duathlon but it's gonna be an enjoyable one.  I never was one to rush my milestone in multisport but I'm always there to enjoy the process and another lesson I did remember in this exercise... chasing PR makes running, duathlon and triathlon a lifestyle and not just a fad.
So I'm now back to chasing my own PRs.  Back to the training grounds.

Lazy Month of May

Lazy May
My personal history dictates that May is my laziest month of the year.   Working my first few years in an audit firm, May is the start of the slack season wherein you can forget about your accounts (tentative or not) and look forward to your cluster or market circle outing.  The remaining years of my work life spent in a multinational company wherein AGM is done at end of April and May is slack season again.  May to me is an adventure month wherein I'm more of a jetsetter or a travel-a-holic more than anything else.  I can chronicle so much adventure at this time of the year.  There was a time wherein I spent barely a week working with me jetting off to Singapore, Australia and Cambodia and having an Anawangin Adventure, Palawan and Tagaytay trip in between.  Then there's those frequent travels to Hong Kong or ticking off most of the domestic destination at this time.  Nothing spells May to me like V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N.
Strictly Singapore
Ended April and Started May with a quick swing to Singapore for this year's AGM.  I always say that the development is so fast in Singapore that every year you end up visiting a new attraction but this time I just took time to be with friends.  First day was spent with Sharon and Yohannce.  It's just this time of the year that I get to see Sharon which was a change from our frequent dinners before when she was still in Philippines.  The next day was spent with Mascy's niece, Maki who's such a smart and cute kid.  I love playing with Maki as she's just so amusing to watch with all her talents and endless tales.  Next stop was AGM which was an animated one compared to the routine one we had in the previous years.  Last day was spent doing a run in Singapore's warm morning and meeting up with another friend Warna.  I guess when you come visit the place so ofter it's the people you get to meet again you look forward to more than the place.
Sporty Side
  • Subit - I'm off to Subic for the weekend to watch the Subic International Triathlon and support Team Total Fitness.  Of course, I'll also take time for a two hour bike ride around Subic's scenery while the rest of the team do their last minute race preparations.  It's gonna be fun watching a triathlon event for the first time.  It was late last year, when I watched a duathlon event and ended up competing in one on the next leg.  The tri event might take more time though as I've been raised in the mountains of Baguio and have no idea hot to swim but who knows, I never even saw myself running just a few years ago.
  • Caylabne - I'll be attending a multi-sport camp at Caylabne on the 19th. It's gonna be a solid brick training to prepare me for powerade duathlon.  It should be a nice change of environment and interesting test of strength and endurance.  This should be fun.
  • Powerade Duathlon - By the 27th, it's gonna be my second duathlon and a chance to improve my time in 6K run, 30K bike and a 3K finish at a different venue.  I hope to be able to build some steam coming into this event even though this month has a lot of side events and disruptions.   Time to cease my lazy ways and train and work harder.
Bakasyonista Side
  • Las Casas - It's gonna be a unique experience as I try to sneak in a day to visit Las Casas in Bataan.  I have seen pictures of this place and heard some great feedback so time to check it out.
  • Back to Bohol - I'm going back to Bohol with SGV friends from the 11th to the 13th.  There's been a lot of changes in Bohol since my last visit in 2009 and since I'm thinking of doing half marathon distance in Bohol Marathon then it should be a good way to assess the course.  Other than that, it's gonna be great hanging out with old friends and just having a vacation.
Packed Month of May
I guess I have a packed month of May to look forward to and given that with a heavy travel schedule I have to squeeze in more quality training time so even if I'm struggling a bit as of late, It's all systems go!

Team Total Fitness: A Season After

New Kids No More
Time does move so fast when you are having a great time.  It just seem like yesterday that the team were just  a group of strangers bundled together in a photo shoot for the Team's feature launch in Total Fitness magazines.  The new kids in running and multisport block (read here) we were back then as we came in full force in our debut race in Adidas KOTR with most conquering new distances and the rest conquering new personal records.  Of course, that says the story from in the beginning and here's to look back at the first full season before we became new kids... no more.
Race... Race... and more Races
One of the basic tenets of a team is that you have to establish presence and with that the Team was active in the running and multi sport scene with a racing load of about 2-3 races in a month.
  • We've raced in the rain in the Anvaya Cove Triathlon, Energizer Night Run and New Balance Power Run on our first full weekend racing.
  • We've had a crampsfest in Powerade on a full duathlon distance.
  • We've conquered 400 meters of elevation of Tagaytay Highlands in Nathan ridge run.
  • We've raced in the country's largest highway in Quezon City International Marathon.
  • We've tested our limits against the uphill trails and terrains at Corregidor International Marathon.
  • We've welcomed 2012 in back to back races with Run for Pinoy Glory and PSE Bull Run.
  • We've took on the scenic yet challenging Subic International Marathon.
  • We've conquered the skyway and the country's first midnight marathon in Condura Skyway Marathon.
  • We've opened our triathlon season at Speedo National Age Group Triathlon.
  • We've run the extra mile with Rogin-E's last man running.
  • We've started 2012 duathlon season with Powerade duathlon in Filinvest.
  • We've conquered the Tagaytay Highlands trails at Salomon trail run.
  • We've survived a zombie infestation in Outbreak Manila.
  • We've coasted on the fine white Boracay Sands in Skaython.
  •  We've gone the long course in TNF100.
Training Time
Total Fitness is the brand we represent and most of all it's the lifestyle that we live.  We do take our training seriously as we have a day to run as a group in either an all-out effort interval session, a core and run combination workout or a long and tough hill run.  There's also our long runs and long rides on weekends wherein we at times workout as a group.  Every start of the week just means you have a new program to complete where you start logging the required swim, bike and run mileage.  At the start, it gets difficult to comply with but as the season went on you get to find ways in squeezing the needed workouts while trying to balance the other stuff in your life.  After all, Total Fitness does mean being fit mind, body and soul.
We also have triathlon camps conducted by Coach Andy Leuterio wherein we get to have an actual brick workout which usually combines a swim session, a long and tough hill ride and a run workout.  This aim to simulate actual triathlon and duathlon events improving the team's endurance and transitioning from one discipline to another.
And the Fun Times
Before you get the impression that Team Total Fitness is all work-out and no play, we do also meet socially just to have time to bond over a good meal or a round of drinks.  It also does take longer to leave our training grounds now as we do have a lot of stories and experiences to share as a group.  We also just don't swim, bike and run, we also write.  Total Fitness was kind enough to include us in their writing pool and some of us had the opportunity to see our actual by-lines and photos in the magazine.  The Team also enjoyed full coverage from the magazine during the whole duration of the season.  Of course, part of the fun is having supportive sponsors (Total Fitness, Oakley, ON Cloudrunners, Brooks Apparel, Polar, Cep, i-pure, Chris Sports, Honey Stinger, Dermplus,  Epic Triathlon and Cycling Wear, Moving Comfort and 100 plus) were all the way to support us and we are all grateful for all the support.
Better and Bolder
In just a few days, it's gonna be a whole new season.  New team mates, new sponsors and new challenges.  We're definitely better and bolder... Stay Tuned!!!

Dear Papa

Sequel to Half a Life Time Ago.
 April 15, 2012

Dear Papa,

Looking back at the fateful day of April 15, 1994... What if things would have ended differently???  Instead of the heart-breaking news that came. It was you that came home with your usual warm and funny personality.  What if to this day, you were there to guide us and see how we grew up and became successful professionals.
18 years could have made a world of difference.  Let me start with the last thing you taught me.  The last thing you taught me was how to shave my facial hairs.  My high school self has adopted your genetic structure in terms of facial hair and am starting to grow a beard and that is when I had my first shave.  I need to relearn that as I now tend to go most of the time with the bad-boy unshaven look.
I think one of the daddy duties that would have easily been taught back then was driving a car and it would have been illegal to have my 16 year old self hold the steering wheel and drive.  I learned to drive when I was 28 years old after finally getting enough funds to buy me a car.  Imagine if I learned to drive earlier, I would have aspired to get a car earlier in my career.
And speaking of careers, I would have needed your fatherly advise sometime during my career as we have similar business degrees and you have the entrepreneurial spirit in you.  For most of the time in my career, I was way ahead and carried too much load my early adulthood self could barely handle.  Of course, I somehow got some resilience from your DNA that had me endure the tough times.  I would have wanted someone to talk to when I was stressed or if I seem that it if I'm up against the impossible.  You could have said anything and I would feel energize with the work at hand.
I think the major difference is that Mama would have her contra-pelo, you tend to balance each other with your 'sutil' ways and Mama being able to absorb it in her funny bunso-type of way.  By the way, I did inherit some of your mischief along the way.  It would have been great to come home once in a while with the whole family intact or you could have visited us in Manila where we could drive you around. Oh wait, I am not sure if you'd let me hold the steering wheel in your presence or you'd just say, I'm driving.
You always was an independent minded person and even if things were difficult back then, you won't throw it back at us.  You'd silently find a way to make both ends meet.   You didn't force the idea of being content with what we had but seeing the concept in your lifestyle, it did leave a mark.  I somehow got your independent-mindedness.  I take ownership of my actions and my problems.  I don't take it out on anybody but I just find a way to solve them.
The list could go on but the longer the list goes, the more I realize that you never left.  You left as much of yourself in us all before that fateful day.  The way we react to things... the way we endure... the way we are content... the way we own up to our action... It was you.  It was how you would have done things.  You did pass on the baton, albeit earlier than usual.
Your presence is what I could have wanted but it was always there.  While it gets confusing to carry the name Francisco Ramon Jr. (as it's both a common first and last name), I wasn't just a Junior.  I was you.  Did I ever say thank you for all that. I probably wasn't able to as you left so fast without any goodbyes but  I'm thanking you by carrying out your legacy.  I really appreciate how you molded me even if it was just for the first 16 years of my existence.
Thank you!

Love,

Cocoy

P.S. I'm not a fan of writing letters but I did enjoy writing this one as it felt like really talking to you on your death anniversary.

Lasema SPA

SPA-dict
I'm a SPA-dict and it does go with my lifestyle.  My sister would always mention how I try to break myself training and then eventually end up in the SPA for rest and recovery.  I guess it goes both ways, I love testing my limits and at the same time, I'd like to reward myself with a soothing massage after accomplishing my goals.  Well, you can add SPAs to the business that has benefited from the running fad.
Lasema SPA

I heard about Lasema Spa years ago but it was just recently that I tried out their spa facilities.
As an overview:
  • They have the wet sauna area which has sauna rooms and 3 kinds of Jacuzzi pool (Hinoki, massage and cold pool).
  • They have the dry sauna area consisting of (Chungito, Salt Charcoal, Oak and Clay and an Ice room.
  • They have 12 cave rooms for sleep and rest and recreation area (Internet, snack bar and TV) if you would want to maximize the 12 hours maximum stay at Lasema.
  • They also have massage rooms.
Jjim Jil Bang
I took the full package meaning I can use up all the facilities but spent more time using the Jjim Jil Bang (dry sauna area) which is the korean style of sauna made famous by those Koreanovelas.  3 hot and dry sauna's and 1 cold sauna so here we go wherein you alternate 1 hot and 1 cold sauna. Here we go.
Oak and Clay Sauna (54 degrees)
I first tried out the Oak and Clay Sauna which was about 54 degrees hot.  The room was filled with natural sedimentary stones which has a natural curing effect for the body and can help relieve skin and respiratory ailments.
Ice Room (-7 degrees)
Alternated the Ice Room at negative 7 degrees after a visit to each of the hot saunas and even with the shirt and short uniform, 5 minutes in the ice room was tolerable.  It does help soothes tired muscles, tendons, bones, nerves and also close out skin pores.
Salt Charcoal Room (51 degrees)
Next up was the Salt Charcoal Room at 51 degrees which contains carbon and minerals like calcium, magnesium and iron.  It helps the body detoxify, speed up the body's metabolism and good for relaxation.
Dome Clay Sauna / Chungito (74 degrees)
Last on the hot sauna was the Chungito which consist of porous mud which is the hottest room at 74 degrees.  The mineral in the mud helps energize the body by releasing negative ions in the body plus the warm feel also helps you sweat out some unwanted fats.
Jjim Jil Bang Experience
I did enjoy switching from hot to cold to hot to cold again and again.  It does increase your tolerance of the heat and makes you stay a bit longer knowing that the next stop will have you cool down.  The best part about it is that after just a round of trying out each of the room, I lost a full pound.  It could have been more had I gone for more rounds.
Deep Tissue Massage
I didn't try the wet sauna this time but it would have been cool to go for those warm 43 degrees jacuzzi pools and massage.  I went directly to my scheduled deep tissue massage for my overused and stress-ridden muscles. They have a separate area for the massage and what was good is that it's packaged together with the wet and dry sauna.
Energized
After completing the Jjim Jil Band and the massaged, I felt relaxed and energized.  It's a great alternative over a regular spa and it does come in reasonably priced rates of Sauna (P250), Jjim Jil Bang & Sauna (P450 on weekdays and P550 on weekends), Massage + Sauna (P650) and Jjim Jil Bang + Sauna + Massage (P890 on weekdays and P990 on weekends) and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

Holy Week
I used to spend my holy week out of town or on domestic trips to take advantage of the long weekend.  This year, it was supposed to be spent at my home town as it's my sister's birthday celebration and my first run on my hometown via Baguio 21K.  One thing led to another and a series of unfortunate events after, I ended up with a totally different experience.  It was not a good one but its an experience and as they say, what doesn't kill you could only make you better.
Baguio 21K
I've handpicked Baguio 21K as one of my key races for the year.   Running in my hometown was one thing I really did looked forward to and up to hours before I was still eating several kilometers of hills just for this challenging run.  Though may have lost a little bit of long run endurance preparing for my first duathlon a few weeks ago, I was really looking to enjoy the hills and a bit sentimental coming home for something I'm passionate about.  This is the second edition and I've been registered for both events and I've missed both. Last year was due to my cousin's wedding and this year was due to series of unfortunate events.  Oh well, Baguio has also been struck with the run craze so I'll still get my run in the City of Pines one of these days.
Series of Unfortunate Events
Timing Belt
We would be taking an early dawn trip to Baguio and hope to be in Baguio early on Good Friday morning.  After a quick meal at Jollibee in NLEX and a few kilometers before Pililan exit.  Our car speed slowly decelerated though my sister was able to bring the car in the shoulder bay in time before the car went dead.  There we were stuck in NLEX in still a very dark 4:30 am.   It was real creepy being stuck in the middle of nowhere in pitch dark of dawn.  You could feel your car sway every time a car passes by because of their speed.  We were able to call NLEX and had a patrol officer assist us and was able to call a tow truck which would bring us to the nearest exit, which is Pulilan.  It's also nice to note that the Patrol Officer was so helpful and professional.  I learned that when you get help from Patrol Officers when you are in NLEX and SCTEX, it's all part of your toll fee.
At Pililan, it turned out that it was because of a torn timing belt and problem was since it was Good Friday, there were no parts available so it took the whole day just to look for a timing belt and have it installed.  Next problem was that they also chipped the main pulley installing the timing belt but it was good to go but since it was a bit late, we decided just to eat dinner and spend the night at Clark.
Hard Rain
Another sign that things were not going right was that after we had dinner, it was raining real hard.  We just took it slow and arrived at Widus Hotel in Clark at night.  We then proceeded with our trip at 7 am.
Main Pulley
On our way to Baguio, we had another mishap in SCTEX.  We heard a screeching sound and then the car had a sudden jump so we went back to shoulder.  It turned out the belts in the Main Pulley has been displaced.  We were able to bring our car to a repair shop in Tarlac and it turned out that there was a problem with the Main Pulley.  CRV parts are a bit hard to find and a good thing my cousin was just in nearby Concepcion, Tarlac so we had an extra transport to find the missing parts and we were able to find it in Angeles, Pampanga after checking in Tarlac.  It was also my sisters birthday so her aborted party in Baguio became an impromptu Chicken joy lunch at the repair shop.  The car was ready by evening and it was another day spent at the repair shop.  We had dinner and drinks at Concepcion, Tarlac with my cousin and went back to Clark past midnight to check in again at Widus Hotel.
Clark 21K
Since Baguio 21K did not push through, I was planning to do my scheduled long run at Clark and I even arranged my gears already.  Clark was such a wide space for a good run but after having back-to-back stress ridden days at the repair shop, my body just didn't have the energy to rise up early and ended up waking up at past 10 am.  It was just in time to catch the checkout time of 12 noon.  I'll just have to run and bike in Clark soon or I may just have to set a training session here one of these weekends.  Oh well, one thing you'll realize at doing multi-discipline sports is that your body do have limitations that's why you have to sleep and recover well to remain fresh and rejuvenated on a year long training program.  We had lunch at the London Pub in Mimosa compound and we were off headed home.  I'm just glad to be back in Makati safe.
Flat Tire
But wait, just as I thought all the bad luck has gone away.  I went for a bike ride from house to my office parking area to get my car and do some loop and I wasn't even on my 3rd kilometer biking.  I heard some screeching sound and when I finally went down to check on it, one side of the tire just popped and BANG, a flat tire.  Good thing, I was just nearby my parking lot so I was able to get my car.  I have since fixed the tire by using an extra set.  It was another chance to practice my bike tire changing skills.
Bad Luck?
After a series of unfortunate events, do I believe in bad luck?  I'm more in the mode to say that we create our luck though it does help to remain cautious but not too careful either.  I guess, everything happens for a reason.  Some may perceive it as bad luck but I want to see it that after a series of unfortunate events, I'm still safe.  Some protective hands might have been cushioning some of those mishaps.  It was not a comfortable experience and it was nowhere near fun but it did teach some valuable lessons that could go far away.  I've learned more about cars the past two days than my past six years driving.  It's also a lesson in patience and presence of mind in tough situations.  In some eerie way, you just can't fight the signs and just have to make the most of the situation.  Somehow, the closer we got to Baguio the more mishaps happen.  So I'd just shake of these series of unfortunate events and go on.
Half A Lifetime Ago
In a few days, it's also gonna be my father's dead anniversary and in my blog written two years ago (click here), I mentioned of a coincidence that my lolo and lola's death was on a year that ended in 8, my dad and uncles on a year that ended in 4. Does that mean our generation would end in 2?  2012 does end in a 2 so makes you think but I'd rather dismiss it as just mere coincidence.  Everything is uncertain and that what makes life exciting.  I'd leave it that way.

Sambo Kojin

Barbeque
The first time I had a do-it-yourself grilled barbeque experience was during my first trip in Taipei years ago and it was a perfect match.  My tummy immediately liked the taste of barbequed lean meat. Play around with the sauce and spices and there you go a savory treat for your taste buds.  From then on, grill your own barbeque has been one of my favorite cravings.
Sambo Kojin
Mascy cooking for us.
And then came Sambo Kojin cook-all you want, barbeque-all-you-can eat barbeque.  I am not really a fan of eat all-you-can restaurant as I don't eat much but Sambo Kojin should be an exception.  I don't know if this goes as a sound excuse for eating much but somehow you get to eat in moderation since you still have the cooking time in between food intakes.   If that doesn't count as an excuse then might as well fall into the temptation of grilling meat, fish and other seafoods or go for their immediately available meals like sushi, maki and tempura or the variety they have for dessert ranging from fruits to cake to ice cream. Throw in good company, then that's definitely a great combination.

Birthday
Spent my birthday here with Team Total Fitness and another follow up weeks after with Mascy, Jeff Lara and Nicole and it seems that a lot of people are spending their birthdays too here as you get to see the birthday greeting from the crew every now and then.  A good way to pamper your guest and yourself is an all-you-can easy to digest meal.  It was a good celebration and once I get that craving for grilled food, Sambo Kojin is on top of my list.
The Cost
The Sambo Kojin experience is priced at a flat rate of P600 per person. A bit pricey for those who don't eat much but if you're in to treat yourself and indulge in the different barbeque variety and also play around with the different sauces and spices, the cost is something you can maximize.  The place is usually packed so it would be good to reserve or have yourself wait listed at a specific time.  That says much on how the business is doing and how people are hooked on the Japanese barbeque variety but probably the best way to appreciate Sambo Kojin is to visit them at:

Sambo Kojin Eastwood - Eastwood Citywalk, Queaon City

Goodbye Ultra Busy Days

Busy Mode
My mind and my patience take a beating on weekdays at work and my body and muscles take a beating on weeknights for trainings.  It goes to ultra busy mode on the merry month of March.  Annual report rush is one of the events that keeps me at the office at times up to midnight and at the same time, I still try to have meaningful workouts as I was able to sneak in my duathlon debut this month.  I'll always be a busy person and even if you take work out of the equation, I still have tons of to dos in my ultra busy life.
I'm probably one of the best when it comes to time management and the worst in room management.  While I am capable of finishing the annual report and preparing and crossing the finish line for my first duathlon, it's the little things that is left unaccomplished like cleaning my room, buying my food supplies, and all those little chores. Yet despite being ultra busy, I did have one hell of a month with my birthday celebration extending until yesterday at Sambokojin, my first out-of-town camp and of course, finishing my first duathlon.
Finer Side
After all those sleep shortened nights, I get to start catching up and re-shifting my body clock to training mode.  The Annual Report is printing and it'll be the first time to finish it without going to Taipei to check on the proofs.  Everything was done online. Not as efficient as expected but the bottom line is the work is done and I just have an AGM to finish and it's anything goes from there on.  April should be a  lot more exciting with me joining a high altitude, a zombie and beach runs.
As summer heats in the Philippines, I can fill my weekends effortlessly and am probably booked til end of May and none of these even involve work.  Weekend has either been training or more training but with those out of town runs, it's definitely more fun in the Philippines.
First Stop
At my first stop and came at an impulse was a trip back to 88 Hot Springs in Laguna.  I figured my battle-weary muscles could benefit from the volcanic hot springs waters.  After this, I should be all set for my final build up for Baguio 21K.
Hello April!!!

Cool as Ice... Cream

The summer heat has come and so does all the craving for ice cream and here comes Magnum with its rich rich chocolatey taste that comes in Classic, Almond and Chocolate Truffles flavor.  While it's newly launched in the Philippines, it isn't new to me as I've tried it already in some of my foreign trips.  If you love chocolates then Magnum is for you.  I'm more into the fruity flavors so there are several ice creams I prefer than Magnum.
Melona, the popular ice cream from Korea, is available in several fruity flavors that ranges from melon, strawberry, banana, mango and lime.  It's a soft ice cream on a stick which has a fruity taste and just the right amount of sweets. It's not a new brand but it has now a broader distribution base compared to limited Korean supermarkets before.  I was able to buy one in S&R, Rustans and Rockwell and the mini stop in Dela Costa.
Whenever I shop at S&R, I look forward to their pizza and their ice cream, Blue Bunny.  My partiality to blue bunny brand is it does have some unique flavors, I once tried a bubble gum flavor that had an actual gum within the ice cream.  Then there's the pistachio, choco mint and strawberry flavors that is such a delight to my sweet tooth.
Simply Amici(ng).  Cara Mia is now the brand carried by the Amici Ice Cream which probably among the first to introduce Gelato or italian ice cream in the market or at least in my own consciousness.  Gelato have less fatty content which is healthier than the regular ice cream.  People actually flocked to Don Bosco before just for their ice cream and now with Caramia, they have become more available and expanded their product line to other dessert based ice cream.  I just love the rich taste of their different flavors.
Golden spoon capitalizes on having non fat and low fat Yogurt.  It's guilt-free as we somehow associate ice creams with something that can make us fat but Yogurt is an healthier alternative.  I do love that they also have some different flavors like espresso which is practically a combination of your dessert and your much needed afternoon shot of caffeine and some fruity variant like banana and strawberry.
One of my favorites is the ice cream you get to buy in the streets of Singapore that cost S$1.  They have unique flavors like ripple, peppermint, honeydew and others and is packaged with a slice of multicolored bread or wafer.  Now, that's an ice cream sandwich.  I somehow end up eating several flavors every time I  pass by Orchard or Raffles Place in Singapore.
Of course, the list could go on but I'd leave it at that as I'd rather be cooling down with ice cream rather than writing about it.  By the way, my favorite ice cream ever since I was a kid was the Orange flavor twin popsies. =>

It's All in the Mind

Bonifacio Global City

Even if I've been in Manila for over 10 years now, I always felt that there were limited places to go to that doesn't involve eating at a fancy restaurant, shopping and hanging out in a mall or watching a movie.  So when there are new attractions in town, I immediately try to visit the place and check it out.  Bonifacio Global City have several new upgrades.  There's a new section of the high street and also a park nearby the area... and just recently, they opened the Mind Museum.
The Mind Museum

The Mind Museum (http://www.themindmuseum.org/) is conveniently located at Rizal Drive near Burgos Circle and it's 12,500 square meters of pure Science.  It's everything under the sun and even beyond it... A. K. A. the universe.  It's divided into several sections from exhibit on tiny atoms, to the history of living things, to the vast technological developments, to the Earth's history to the vast scopes of the universe.  There's also a science in the park just outside the museum which could be a playing while learning experience for kids.  It would be much better to experience the mind museum in the flesh and is definitely highly recommended for students.  Seeing a lot of the different fields of science through the mind museum sure beats reading those voluminous textbook.
My Favorites

There's a place where you can actually capture your shadow.  So do those crazy poses for the shadow to be captured.

A feel of outer space.  The milky way galaxy is just nearby.

The world in the palm of your hands.
Those tiny depiction of the dinosaurs... and...
Stan, the 40-Foot high T-Rex
The Mind Museum is open from Tues day to Sunday from 9 Am to 9Pm and is located at:
2/F Bonifacio Technology Center
31st Street Corner 2nd Avenue
Bonifacio Global City, Taguig
Ticket Prices Ranges from P150 for teachers and Public School Students, P450 for Private School Students and P600 for adults.

Things I Look Forward To

Time and Worry
The reason why I'm not able to post any updates on my site is that I'm short of time and I'm overflowing with worries.  I've been down to eat-sleep-work-train routine for the past week and the good part about it is that I'm starting to build a bit of a momentum.  I'm always at my best when times are challenging.  Despite being good in time management, I'm caught wanting to have more time in my hand to do all the stuff that I want to do.  I guess, time does move on even if you're in an interlude so stop dreaming and start getting things done for me.
It's also intense that we're against the clock in the annual report rush.  I still don't have a clear picture on how to meet the deadline but all I know is that anything's possible.  If the past has taught me one thing is that if you give it your best shot, someway or somehow things will fall into place.  It's never easy but a task completed is a reward in itself.  Victory or success is sweetened by adversity so rather than digging endless reasons to fail, just do the task at hand and you'll have a better shot at getting what you want.
Staying positive despite all that weigh you down is the challenge.  Situations change, tough times come and at times, you just can't catch a break but it's your mindset that spells the difference between a whiner and a winner.  I'd rather not dwell on the worries of the moment but look forward on things that's yet to come.
My First Duathlon
Based on my first training camp, I'm a bit raw for my first duathlon.  The run speed and endurance is there but I've got lots more sufferfest to endure before a decent finish in the bike leg but this one is just for the feel of a duathlon event.  I may not be able to have a strong finish here but this would definitely keep me motivated in becoming better at it.  It's been baby steps for me when it comes to bike training and after this, it's time to get on the next level. 6K Run, 30K Bike and 3K Run.  That's all the number that's in my mind now.  It'll be exciting to just get back on racing grounds after more than a month away from it.
My First Official Run in Baguio

My Bad! That's not actually a running shot but running 5,000 feet above sea level would feel like flying.  I've been running since mid-2010 but this is just the first time I would actually be joining a run in my hometown and it's 21K worth of hills and mountain to climb.  It'll be interesting to reach PMA by foot coming from Burnham Park.  I have downgraded my expectations on this run as I've lost so much steam after being sick two weeks ago and injured a week ago.  One expectation though that never change is that I'll have fun going through the terrain and the distance.
My First Run with Zombies

Oops that's not an actual Zombie but what's the difference if you get caught, you're dead meat.  Ever since the zombie outbreak has been heard of I've been sold on the idea of joining.  It's gonna be interesting on protecting 3 lives on a 5K route infested by Zombies.  Oh wait, wouldn't it be more interesting to run as a Zombie.  Let's see but in case I ran as a human, I hope I join the last wave as I'm sure all the zombies should be exhausted by then.
My First Beach Run

Running in the fine white sands of Boracay with the sun just starting to rise would be a splendid experience and lucky me, I'm assigned to cover the event and join in the 10K run.  I just wonder what my color scheme would be after all this runs and a beach run but it's summer in the Philippines and there's no other place I'd prefer to spend my summer.  Being tan at this time of the year is just synonymous to having fun.
My First Out of the Country Trip for the Year

This is a bit odd that I get to start my travels on the fourth month of the year but I want to reduce my travel load and focus more on training and balancing my time here.  I am looking forward to this trip as I get see friends in Singapore I get to see only once or twice a year.  Then again, I still need to finish the annual report before I get to look into that date.  Seeing old friends just keep me excited.
I'd cut my things to look forward to at that as I might have already fully booked my summer this early into the year.  I'm also in the thought process of having a long out of the country vacation but that I have to plan after my busy days are over.  It's gonna be exciting and did I mention, Season 2 for Team Total Fitness is yet to come. I just can't wait for that...

My 34th

Overwhelmed
I'm overwhelmed with the overflowing greetings that came days before and until March 9 and even days that followed.  I really look forward to my birthday each year and even if the fanfare or the celebration gets downgraded by the year, it still is my favorite time of the year.  It was great to have so many people from different circle take time to greet you on your birthday.
Early Morning Sufferfest
I woke up with over 50 unread messages and posts already.  I started my day with an early morning sufferfest going through the revolver workout.  It was refreshing to have the good kind of pain to get you started on your birthday and the messages continued to come in during the day.  I probably spent a large chunk of the day replying to everyone's greetings. Birthday lunch with treasury team and Jing at Max's. Pizza for the office in the afternoon.  It's an eat and eat a lot day.  Maybe I should have loaded another session of sufferfest in the morning.
Sambokojin Dinner
I had my pre-birthday treat at Nanbantei with AGSB friends Grace and Alpha last Wednesday and Lunch at Sugarhouse with another AGSB friend April on Thursday but the biggest of the bash was at Sambokojin with Team Total Fitness.  It was an eat all you can, cook all you want Japanese barbeque at Sambokojin in Edsa.  Team Total Fitness came in full force sans few who had some reasons to miss the event.  I always like the cook and barbeque style of dining.  It does add comfort that whatever we eat today will be burned the hard way tomorrow in a training camp.  Great food + Great Company = Great Birthday.
Team Total Fitness Training Camp
Time to burn all those calories loaded in Team Total Fitness and Coach Andy Leuterio's Swim, Bike and Run Camp at Tagaytay International Convention Center.  I watched the swim part as I'm here more for the bike and run part.  I had a different bike route from the rest of the Team as they are going for a 60Km high elevation climb while I would be joining Mario in an easier route in Amadeo Area.
I hit a major road block going to the 7th kilometer via my first flat tire.  What a bummer? I just couldn't catch a break lately. Two weeks ago, I was down with flu. Last week I had pain on my quads. Now, a flat tire.  I guess part of training is your body and machine failing.  After my tire was repaired, we continued with a 20-kilometer ride with the last 13 kilometers spent climbing.  End result, I was able to complete the bike leg though I did notice a lot of weak spots to work on - heat management, leg strength and endurance.
"Having weak spots does not make you a weak person, not doing anything about it, does."
It's back to development of my bike skills and leg strength as I have a long way to go when it comes to cycling.  Up next was a 5K run in the oval at TICC.  First 2 of 12 laps felt difficult as I was still feeling the fatigue from the bike part but got my second wind on the 3rd lap and went on to finish the 12 laps at a pace between 6-6:30 per minute pace.  There it was, my first brick workout.  A lot of pain, a lot of weak spots to work on but it was a good start.  What a way to celebrate a birthday.
Back to Manila
After lunch and chilling a bit at Starbucks in Tagaytay, it was back to Manila and my sister pulled me for another treat... Bulalo at nearby Batangus... Oh well, the celebration hasn't ended yet.  It's another 365 days to plot out the next one.
My Birthday Wish
For some reason, i can't think of a good birthday wish.  Somehow, I feel that of the things I want, it's either I already have or it's something I can work for.  The year I had was a good one.  I had been able to do things, I never though I could have done before. I was able to pursue some passions that I thought was a thing of the past.  It wasn't always easy but it always was a great journey.  I guess whatever life throws at you is just experience and it does not become a bad experience unless you refuse to learn from it.
Thanks to everyone who made my day and my 33rd year a great one and I'm looking forward that you'd still be an integral part of my 34th.  All the greetings are much appreciated. Cheers!!!

SRI Phils Powered Team Total Fitness

One of the benefits of Team Total Fitness is that we get to tap most of the wide range of products Sports Resources Inc.  (SRI Phils) has to offer. SRI distributes various sports, recreation and outdoor sports products.   A lot of the products they offer was helpful during our trainings and our races.
Published January - February 2012 Issue of Total Fitness Magazine

One of the new items SRI Phils distributes in the market is CEP.  I tested the product for Total Fitness Magazine and the all sport sleeves has been a constant gear for all of my long runs and key races.  Compression technology helps in regulating blood circulation and stabilizes the muscles.   It does help you in chasing those elusive personal records in races as you get to dwell more on the running and worry less about muscle strain or fatigue.

Brooks is the official apparel partner of Team Total Fitness.  Their running apparels fuses in lightweight, innovative fabrics and designs that provides more comfort to runners.  When you're running for an hour or more, it pays to feel comfortable with what you wear and Brooks apparel provides that for our team.  Not to mention the 'pogi' points that comes with their innovative designs.

As you attempt running at faster speed or longer distance, you'll take whatever help you get.  A key ingredient that influences that is balance.  This is where i-pure energy bracelets comes in to play.  From proper balance comes energy and additional strength to continue thriving on the latter part of the race.
It does get annoying when you have your shoelace loose and have to stop just to tie them back.  This is one of the reasons that all my running shoes uses Xtenex as a shoe lace.  Xtenex uses elastic laces that fits in the eyelets or your shoes and uses elastic beadds to lock in to the shoes.  Now, you can just slid your feet in your shoes and run.

Then they have all the products that ranges from extreme to technical sports , health and fitness, outdoor sports, recreational sports, lifestyle and water sports. SRI Phils can be accessed at their website:  (http://www.sriphils.com/index.php?route=common/home).
